A Note from the Program Coordinator’s desk…
One of the most common questions I get asked as the Program Coordinator at TYHP is:
“How can I increase my kid’s chances of getting picked for a hunt?”
It’s no secret that there is a lot of competition to get a spot on a TYHP hunt but I’m here to help you improve your
chances, give you some insider information and pro tips!
Did you know over 2,000 youth apply each season? Don’t let that number discourage you! With a few strategic tweaks, you and your young hunter could be out in the field sooner than you think.
Preparation and planning are everything. After nearly a decade as Program Coordinator, I’m ready to share all the tips you need to secure your spot!

Apply for a Lot—But be Intentional
We’ll post more than 200 hunts this season across the state. The more hunts you apply for, the better your chances. That said, don’t just apply blindly.
PRO TIP:
Take an afternoon with your child and an old-school printed map of Texas. Mark the areas you’re willing to drive to and make a note of the counties. When the calendar opens, you’ll be ready to apply to the hunts that make sense for your family. Don’t forget to keep your child’s school events calendar handy, nothing more sad than having to decline a hunt you are approved for because you’re committed to something else that weekend. cx
INSIDER INFORMATION: When parents ask me why they didn’t get a spot last season I look at their applications and find that they might have only applied for 10-15 hunts. That is just a drop in the bucket, most kids who land a spot will have applied for well over a hundred hunts within the season.
Tent Camping = Less Competition
Hunts that require tent camping tend to have fewer applicants, which means higher odds of getting selected. If your family is up for the adventure, these hunts are a great way in!

Be Ready to Say YES
Every year we get a ton of last-minute cancellations—and that’s good news for those who are ready to jump in quickly.
PRO TIP:
Have a “Go Bag” ready with your essentials, and turn in the following items early (even before you’re selected):
- Proof of Hunter Education
- Valid Hunting License (purchase on or after Aug. 15)
- Proof of TWA Membership
When you’ve submitted everything ahead of time, you’re ready to accept when the call comes. It happens more than you think!

Refer a Friend, Get Approved Together
If your child has already attended 2–3 hunts and is having a harder time getting picked again, try our Refer-a-Friend option.
Here’s how it works:
Invite a new hunter to apply.
If they’re selected on a hunt you both applied for, we’ll approve you together!
Each of you must leave a comment in your application so I can make the connection.
More Ranches, More Opportunities
We’re thrilled to welcome new ranches into the TYHP family this season, which means even more hunts across the state.
Last year, 1,200+ youth hunters participated—a record we’re aiming to break in 2025–2026!
So here’s the game plan:
Apply early. Apply intentionally. Be prepared!
We can’t wait to see your family out in the field this season!
Best of luck,
